Design Thinking

Grouping of our team was based on the chosen brief we each wanted to do. It so happened that as a collective, we consisted of a Graphic Designer, Illustrator and Animator. We were well aware of each other's skillsets and capabilities which made the grouping an easy process. For more information on the strenghts and weaknesses of our group members please click the skillsets button.

As the audio clip is about education and futures we thought about having a setting in a typical child's room that is full of toys that come to life as the speaker, Debra Kidd, is talking about education and its effect on the future. This is when we started having the idea of simple sketches and images in the animation and using children's hand drawn images to act as a part of the film. This was also a chance for us to conduct some primary research. Unfortunately, this did not go ahead as there were too many ethical issues to consider. Our second idea consisted of using real toys in a stop-motion narrative but this was a short-lived idea as this led to our final concept.

We began to piece ideas together which formed a type of, "Imagination Island." This would be built from a child's perspective, as if they were imagining it. The idea was that as the audio plays the island begins to build up section by section and represents a different subject being talked about in school. We finally decided in order to fit the audio we would make two islands, one for the main content to build and one of a teacher talking to a pupil helping them to imagine the island. We decided that some elements would be static and some would have movement in the animation so it would have a good balance.

We started to look at fan animations from Youtubers such as Markiplier and Pewdiepie. We also looked at campaigns that hold a similar social benefit such as the "This Girl Can" campaign by Sport England launched in 2015 and the RSA shorts. This led us to collating mood boards that inspired our island design, including the islands of personality from the Disney Pixaer film 'Inside Out' launched in 2015. There are also mood boards for our character and teacher development.

1. Social and environmental benefit - 25%. How does your animation benefit society by increasing accessibility and clarifying the content?

2. Execution – 15%. We are looking for an animation that is technically well-crafted and presented to the best of your ability

3. Research – 15%. What research went into your animation? Does your submission make clever use of existing material or knowledge around the issue? Your sketchbook and storyboards will be used to judge on this criterion

4. Design Thinking – 20%. We want to know about the thought processes and insights that led you to develop your animation. What journey did you go through to arrive at the final result? Your sketchbook and storyboards will be used to judge this criterion

5. Magic – 25%. We are looking for a bit of ‘magic’ – an animation that is delightful and clever, making best use of the content
